The Partnership Board of EDCTP is seeking two new members to develop the strategic framework of the organisation and advise on scientific and technical matters.
The goal of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) is to reduce poverty in developing countries by improving the health of the populations. EDCTP aims to achieve this through European research integration, and in partnership with African countries to develop new clinical interventions to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
The mission of EDCTP is to accelerate the development of new clinical interventions to fight these diseases in sub-Saharan Africa and to improve the quality of research in relation to these diseases.
General Principle
The Partnership Board (PB) develops the strategic framework for the research programme of EDCTP and advises the General Assembly on technical and scientific matters relating to the EDCTP programme.
The composition of the PB, comprising members from both the North and from disease-endemic countries, is a core element of the South-North partnership approach, which is at the basis of the EDCTP initiative.
The PB designs the strategic scientific framework of the EDCTP funding activities and advises the Assembly on scientific matters relating to the EDCTP programme. For this to be effective, the PB draws up both medium and long-term strategies bearing in mind the ultimate goals of the EDCTP programme and the constantly changing landscape of poverty-related diseases (PRDs) and the burden they impose on developing countries. This may from time to time require a stocktaking and reassessment of current programme and strategy.
Appointment and composition of the PB
The PB comprises nine experts: three from Africa, three from Europe and three co-opted members proposed by the other six to complement their areas of expertise. Appointment and dismissal is the prerogative of the General Assembly (please refer to www.edctp.org).
Term of office
Members shall be appointed for an initial term of up to two years, followed by conditional renewable terms of one year each for a maximum period of five years. Two positions will become available from 1 January 2009.
Administration
The functioning of the PB is facilitated by the EDCTP Secretariat, which is responsible for all logistical arrangements. PB members shall sign a confidentiality agreement and need to declare any possible conflict of interest. PB members will not have managerial or executive functions within EDCTP nor be part of the EDCTP employed staff.
Modus operandi
The PB normally convenes no more than three times per year, usually in The Hague, the Netherlands. Meetings usually last for one or two days. Additional meetings or telephone conferences may be called. EDCTP organises a forum and investigators’ meeting biennially, which requires active participation of the PB members and lasts several days. The Fifth EDCTP Forum will be held on 12 to 14 October 2009 in Arusha, Tanzania.
We are looking for two senior scientific experts and health professionals with experience in one of the following areas:
Each PB member will have a contract with EDCTP, which stipulates remuneration for the time spent on PB activities, subject to approval by the General Assembly of EDCTP. Travel, board and related costs will be reimbursed according to the EDCTP Professional Travel Policy.
