Science and Development Network
News, views and information about science, technology and the developing world
China Science Reporting Network (CSRN) launched on 16 November 2007 in Beijing.
Initially developed as that Science Journalists' Salon in June 2006, with sponsorship from Dupont, the new network is a public welfare platform consisting of various people involved in science communication, mainly science journalists. The CSRN has received massive support from the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ), Science Times/ScienceNet.cn, and SciDev.Net.
With an aim to improve science journalism in China, the network will use various resources to promote peer communication, build the link between journalists and the science community, and create convenient conditions as much as possible for working journalists.
Based on the website http://www.sciencereporting.cn/, the network will organise online and offline communication activities in a flexible way. CSRN's activities include:
1. posting important news clues and relevant academic conference information on the CSRN’ website;
2. disseminating related information about the science journalism industry through the CSRN’ website;
3. facilitating online exchanges on key scientific topics and science clues;
4. organising online discussions and debates on responsible science journalism;
5. cooperating with other agencies to develop professional training and capacity building for the network members and other science journalists;
6. organising academic communication between Chinese journalists and their foreign colleagues; and
7. organising regular communications and discussions between science journalists as well as between journalists and scientists, PIOs and industry people.
The website of CSRN will include the following:
1. weekly updated: important news clues and relevant academic conference information;
2. weekly updated: information about the science journalism industry, such as grants, awards, jobs, and the new advances in the field;
3. interactive features: online bulletin for information exchanges on key scientific topics and science clues, discussion and debates on responsible science journalism and comments on the field;
4. dossiers/training material: including the PDF version of the book Effective Science Reporting in an Era of Globalization, SciDev.Net's Eguide to Science Communication, SciDev.Net dossiers and WFSJ’s online training courses;
5. resources, such as links to SciDev.Net, Eurekalert!, Eurekalert! Chinese, Nature Press, Knight science journalism tracker, AlphaGalileo, Chemistry World as well as connections to active blogs by scientists and science journalists. ScienceDirect and/or Nature China.
